The Lions locked up quarterback Matthew Stafford with a six-year, $135 million contract Aug. 28, practically guaranteeing that former Georgia standout will end his career in Detroit.

A total of $92 million of the deal was guaranteed, and Stafford received a $60.5 million signing bonus.

Some contend that the Lions grossly overpaid for a quarterback with a 53-58 record, including 0-3 in the playoffs.

But Stafford, who’s 1-2 against the Falcons, is highly respected by his opponents, who discussed how he compares with Sunday’s opponent, Aaron Rodgers of the Packers.

“Most definitely, but Aaron Rodgers was more trying to get out to extend plays,” Falcons defensive end Derrick Shelby said. “Stafford wants to stay in the pocket, but if it breaks down around him he’s definitely one who can get out and make you pay with his legs as well.”

Falcons rookie Takkarist McKinley is set to play more with the hamstring injury to outside linebacker Vic Beasley.

“You’ve got to rush disciplined,” McKinley said. “You can’t just rush out of control ... because that’s when he steps ups and makes plays, and who knows what happens.”
