Sunday’s scheduled Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway has been postponed, the latest casualty of the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement Friday, NASCAR announced it had “decided to postpone the race events at Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend and Homestead-Miami Speedway next weekend.”

“We believe this decision is in the best interest of the safety and well-being of our fans, competitors, officials and everyone associated with our sport. We will continue to monitor this dynamic situation as we assess future race events.”

While NASCAR employed the term postpone rather than cancel, there was no immediate mention of a possible make-up date.

Friday began with intentions to run the race Sunday without spectators, which would have made the Atlanta race the only major sporting event still going in light of cancellations and postponements throughout the sporting landscape. But, in what is an ever-fluid situation, there was a late change of heart by NASCAR officials Friday. No other comment was immediately available.
