The Detroit Lions need a backup quarterback, and one of the most intriguing options in the NFL is reportedly being released Monday. But don't expect the Lions to land the services of _ or even be in the hunt for _ Robert Griffin III. The second overall pick in the 2012 draft, Griffin's career has been in a freefall since he tore his ACL while leading Washington to the playoffs as a rookie. Griffin threw for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions that year, but has made just 20 starts in the three seasons since and did not take a snap this year after losing the quarterback job to Kirk Cousins. Just 26, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Griffin resurrects his career with a new team. When healthy, Griffin was one of the game's most athletic quarterbacks _ he ran for 815 yards as a rookie _ and there's plenty of debate about how much untapped potential he has. But after a rocky start to his career, and given the options he's bound to have in free agency, it's highly unlikely he'd want to join a team with an established starter and no clear path to playing time. The Lions, likewise, seem unlikely suitors for Griffin, given how much coach Jim Caldwell values the sanctity of his locker room and how divisive Griffin was at times in Washington. The Lions don't currently have a quarterback other than Stafford under contract for 2016, but they're expected to sign a veteran to a minimum-caliber deal this off-season and address the position at some point in the draft.
