On offense: Oklahoma State averaged 40.8 points and 487.7 yards per game last season and return three premier playmakers: senior dual-threat quarterback Zac Robinson (3,064 yards passing and 562 rushing last season); consensus All-America wide receiver Dez Bryant (1,480 receiving yards last year); and All-Big 12 running back Kendall Hunter (1,555 rushing yards last year). A veteran offensive line is led by four-year starter Russell Okung at left tackle.

On defense: Oklahoma State ranked 93rd among the 119 major-college teams in total defense last season, allowing 405.6 yards per game. The Cowboys brought in a new defensive coordinator, Bill Young, to try to fix things. He is a 40-year coaching veteran who has been defensive coordinator at Miami, Kansas, USC, Oklahoma and Ohio State.

On special teams: The Cowboys are dangerous. Bryant averaged 17.9 yards on punt returns last year, returning two for touchdowns. Perrish Cox is within 110 kickoff return yards of tying the Big 12 career record and has returned four kickoffs for touchdowns.

What you need to know: Oklahoma State is tied for No. 9 in the Associated Press preseason poll, its highest-ever preseason ranking.

What you may not know: The renovated Boone Pickens Stadium retains close-to-the-field seats that, according to OSU's media guide, "suffocate opponents with the tightest sidelines in all of football."
