Comments made by Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson following the team’s scrimmage Saturday morning at Bobby Dodd Stadium. It was the seventh of 15 spring workouts, to conclude with the spring game April 21.
“There was some good and bad. It was like every scrimmage. I thought that the B-backs did a really nice job. KirVonte (Benson) and Quaide (Weimerskirch), I don’t know how many yards they had, but it had to be a ton. Made some nice runs. Offense – too many mistakes and the ball’s out too much and we hit some big plays in the passing game. I thought that TaQuon (Marshall) played well. KirVonte did some things. Quaide had some runs. All in all, it was a scrimmage.”
On the competition at offensive tackle:
“Right now, I don’t know about stepping up to challenge, but Andrew Marshall’s playing pretty good. Jahaziel (Lee) is not playing very good. He should be playing better than he is.”
On backup center Scott Morgan:
“He’s doing good. There was maybe one or two center-quarterback exchange (fumbles). That’s when one of the freshmen checked a play and changed the (snap) count. He’s doing O.K.”
On backup wide receivers:
“Actually, Antonio Messick had some plays today. He made several pretty good plays today. I think he caught two or three fade routes and deep balls and did some good stuff.”
On redshirt freshman quarterbacks Lucas Johnson and Jay Jones:
“(Lucas Johnson) just kind of had some tendinitis stuff and I think just staying out there and reacting and he played a little bit, and I think when it starts to hurt a little bit, his mind wanders some. So, just dial in and focus, because he’s certainly got the ability. Jay Jones was all over the place. Can’t anybody tackle him. A lot of times, it’s not the way it’s supposed to go, but he reverses and he’s athletic. He is a really, really good athlete.”
