Freshman walk-on kicker Wesley Wells has earned the placekicking job for Georgia Tech. After earning his chance to take extra points and field goals in a three-way competition last week, Wells was 9-for-9 on extra-point tries against Bowling Green on Saturday.

Asked Monday if there would be a competition this week between Wells, Shawn Davis and Brenton King, coach Paul Johnson replied, “Nope. He’s the kicker right now.”

Davis won the job in the preseason, but then was replaced by King after missing an extra-point try in the season opener against Alcorn State. King was replaced by Davis after missing an extra-point try against Pittsburgh and then a 43-yard field-goal try against Clemson.

Johnson said Wells’ range would be determined by the situation.

“I mean, he can kick ’em from 50,” he said. “I’ve seen him do it in practice.”

Tech is 23-for-25 on extra-point tries, making the Yellow Jackets one of 21 teams in FBS that have missed two or more PAT’s. Tech was 34-for-38 last season, an accuracy rate (89.5 percent) that was 122nd in FBS.

Davis continues to take kickoffs for the Yellow Jackets.
