Georgia State's basketball and volleyball practice complex may open as early as March 1, but it's likely going to be delayed on purpose.

Senior associate athletic director Doug Justice said that because of a few issues that popped up during the renovations of what was formerly the Aquatic Center next to the Sports Arena, there may be additional work done so that the center is complete and not require work after it opens.

For example, there were leaks found in the roof, so those were repaired but now the ceiling should be painted. That can’t be done after the court is installed, so that has created a slight delay.

The project is still on track to stay within its $1 million budget.

The renovations included filling in the pool with 2-3 feet of concrete, with another 4-5 feet of foam blocks on top of that, topped by a concrete slab. The court will be constructed on top of the slab.

The basketball goals have been installed and can be pulled up if coaches want to watch practices from an elevated angle without something blocking their vision.

The basketball season will conclude in March so the courts don’t have be ready until summer workouts begin.

The completion of construction would be the second major project finished within a year. The first was the workout center for the football team that was completed in Sept. 2015.
