To junior left tackle John Theus, it seemed as though a lot of people learned something new about Todd Gurley on Saturday.

“I had like, three people tell me, ‘Gurley’s left-handed?’” Theus said. “I was like, ‘Yeah. I guess so.’”

But after three years as the Georgia tailback’s teammate, nothing really surprises Theus anymore. Gurley may have completed the Bulldogs’ longest passing play of the season against Vanderbilt — a 50-yarder to freshman tight end Jeb Blazevich — but it wasn’t something Theus didn’t already know he was capable of.

“I remember watching a ‘30 for 30’ on Bo Jackson, and the coach said, ‘People only get to see Bo do stuff once a week, I get to see Bo do amazing stuff every day in practice,’” Theus said. “That’s the same thing with Todd, I think. We get to see a lot more than the average person. Just everyday he amazes us with stuff.”

Theus roomed with Gurley when the two were freshmen, and it is because of who the tailback is as a both a friend and an athlete that the offensive lineman believes he should win the Heisman this year. Theus said “no doubt” he and the offensive line want to help their teammate achieve such an honor.

“That’s stuff I can say for the rest of my life, is that I was blocking for a Heisman winner,” Theus said. “That might be some incentive for us to help him win as well. That would definitely be pretty dang cool to have him win that just so you could say that.”

After his remarkable pass play, 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Vanderbilt, Gurley hurdled Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota to the top spot of ESPN’s Heisman Watch list as of Saturday night.
