New Georgia defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has reached back to his Alabama roots for his first hire.

Dawgs247.com was the first to report that the Bulldogs have tabbed Kevin Sherrer, defensive coordinator at the University of South Alabama, to join the defensive staff as an assistant coach. What position Sherrer will coach is unclear at this time. At South Alabama he coaches defensive backs. But Pruitt is expected to coach defensive backs for Georgia. The Bulldogs currently have vacancies for defensive line and inside and outside linebackers coaches.

Sherrer, Pruitt and UGA offensive line coach Will Friend all played for Alabama in the 1990’s and Pruitt and Sherrer coached together at Hoover High. Before joining South Alabama as defensive coordinator almost exactly a year ago, Sherrer was director of player development for the Crimson Tide from 2010-12.
