Last week, nine former Georgia football players were in Indianapolis as part of the 2019 NFL Combine. But two current Georgia players were also in Indianapolis as well as part of an NCAA program to help inform elite players of what the possible the NFL transition is like.
According to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, quarterback Jake Fromm and offensive tackle Andrew Thomas were both a part of the NCAA's Elite Football Symposium, which invites 25 of college football's best players to Indianapolis to help inform players on a number of issues ranging from agents to social media. Per Rittenberg, the Elite Football Symposium has existed since 2017.
While the event is held in Indianapolis, it was held at NCAA headquarters as opposed to Lucas Oil Stadium. Some of the other college football players at the event included Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, LSU safety Grant Delpit and Stanford left tackle Walker Little.
Thomas has been consistently mentioned as first round pick as a part of the 2020 NFL Draft, given how well he's played in his first two years at Georgia. Thomas started every game as a freshman as Georgia's right tackle and 13 games as Georgia's left tackle as a sophomore. He figures to be a preseason All-American heading into 2019. Thomas was named First Team All-SEC by the coaches in 2018.
The opinion is much more split when it comes to Fromm’s NFL trajectory. Some have noted how much he does for Georgia in terms of pre-snap adjustments, as well as leadership qualities. But others have questions about some of his physical attributes.
And 2020 figures to be a loaded quarterback class, with the likes of Tagovailoa, Oregon’s Justin Herbert, and Washington’s Jacob Eason all being draft eligible quarterbacks. Last season, Fromm threw for 30 touchdowns compared to just 6 interceptions. Like Thomas, Fromm has started all but one game in his first two years at Georgia.
As far as replacements should those two leave early, Georgia would likely slide Isaiah Wilson from right tackle to left tackle, so long as he does not turn pro. Another option would be Cade Mays.
For quarterback, Georgia brought in Dwan Mathis and Stetson Bennett as a part of the 2019 recruiting class. Georgia also picked up a commitment from 4-star 2020 quarterback Carson Beck this past week. The last time a Georgia quarterback declared early for the NFL draft was back in 2008, when Matthew Stafford left early. He went on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
