Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas and linebacker Paul Davis were named ACC offensive back of the week and linebacker of the week, respectively, for their contributions to the Yellow Jackets’ 27-24 win over Virginia Tech Saturday. They’re the first Tech players to be honored by the conference this season.
Thomas led the Jackets’ game-winning drive on their final possession for the second week in a row while running for a career-high 165 yards and a touchdown. Thomas converted a fourth-and-15 with 2 ½ minutes to play with a 19-yard pass to DeAndre Smelter and then found Smelter again for a 31-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with 2:03 left in the game.
After cornerback D.J. White’s interception on the next possession gave Tech the ball back, Thomas then led a drive that set up kicker Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal from 24 yards out as time expired.
Davis recorded a career-high nine tackles and ran back his first career interception 41 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Davis and linebacker Quayshawn Nealy share the team lead with 26 tackles each.
It’s the first time either player has been recognized as an ACC player of the week.
