Georgia Tech basketball player Abdoulaye Gueye was arrested last Monday for simple battery. Gueye, a redshirt sophomore forward from Senegal, has been suspended indefinitely.

According to the Fulton County jail website, Gueye committed the offense Oct. 26. He was arrested and released on Monday.

The Georgia code defines simple battery as an act of making physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with another person or intentionally causing physical harm.

Saturday, Tech coach Josh Pastner referred questions to interim athletic director Paul Griffin. Reached Saturday evening, Griffin said that Gueye’s case was being processed through channels both on-campus and off-campus and that Gueye will not be permitted to play until games on an indefinite basis.

Tech played Shorter in an exhibition game at McCamish Pavilion. Gueye was on the bench and suited up, but did not play. Tech’s opener is next Friday against Tennessee Tech.

Should Gueye not be available for the opener, he will join point guard Josh Heath in being unavailable. Heath will sit out the first four games of the season with a suspension for violating team rules.

Gueye played as a freshman in 2014-15, appearing in four games for a total of 20 minutes, and scoring two points. With the frontcourt deep last season, Gueye was redshirted.

Earlier in the preseason, Pastner said that Gueye had the potential to be an All-ACC defensive team selection. However ready he is, he will likely have some playing role, as the Jackets are thin in the frontcourt.

“He’s long,” Pastner said. “He’s got to be an every offensive rebounder. He’s got to work on his shooting and his ball skills. All that’s important to him.”
