Georgia Tech’s first full-pads practice of spring practice was a bit wanting. On a clear Saturday morning, the Yellow Jackets finished the first week of spring workouts in Bobby Dodd Stadium, devoting the latter portion of the practice to scrimmaging. Given that it was the first live contact since last season and that the roster has 39 scholarship players who have played one season or less, mistakes were plentiful.

“Kids are trying to think and figure out which way to go,” coach Paul Johnson said. “It always happens when you put all the pads on, and all of the sudden, all that you thought you knew goes right out the window.”

Of the 39 who have played one season or less, 18 have not played a snap of college football. That includes two early-enrollee freshmen — B-back Dedrick Mills and linebacker Emanuel Bridges.

“Some of the freshmen are lost,” Johnson said. “It’s hard for those guys, because they haven’t been here long.”

According to the team’s report from the game, cornerbacks Step Durham and Meiko Dotson had interceptions along with linebacker David Curry. Wide receiver Ricky Jeune eluded defenders on a scoring pass from quarterback Justin Thomas, who also ran for a score. Walk-on A-back Austin McClellan scored on a long run down the sideline.

Tech’s spring practice will continue for the next three weeks, culminating with the spring game April 23 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
