New York point guard Jose Alvarado will announce his commitment Thursday, and Georgia Tech is a finalist. The three-star prospect (as rated by ESPN) has named Tech, Rutgers and Seton Hall as his finalists.

For coach Josh Pastner and his staff, landing Alvarado would be a critical piece in their efforts to rebuild the Yellow Jackets. He would be the first member of the 2017 signing class and his commitment could help convince others to join. Pastner has six scholarships to give and may use four on incoming freshmen, saving remaining spots for transfers.

Alvarado, a senior at Christ the King High School, was named the player of the year in the New York Catholic League as a junior. His AAU coach, Andy Borman, described Alvarado as a “hardnosed, tough competitive point guard that will do anything to win.” Alvarado made his visit to Tech in August. Borman said that he enjoyed the visit and was impressed with Pastner.

“He’s a city kid, so I think the idea of going to Georgia Tech, which is right in the heart of Atlanta, is extremely appealing to him,” Borman said. “And, obviously, being able to play in the ACC is a huge draw.”

Alvarado would be able to sign a letter of intent in the November early signing period.

Tech has had two 2017 prospects come to campus on official visits, Alvarado and Ikechukwu Obiagu, a four-star center from Greenforest McCalep Christian Academy in DeKalb County.
