Georgia Tech right tackle Errin Joe will get to finish an impressive season close to home.

Joe has been among the most improved players on the team this season. Prior to this season, he played three games in 2012 as a redshirt freshman and missed the entire 2013 season with a torn labrum, but then ended up starting the past six games of this season, helping the Jackets become the No. 3 rushing offense in the country.

“When I first got thrown in the fire, I was kind of nervous,” Joe said Saturday following the team’s first on-site practice in preparation for the Orange Bowl. “With that, you kind of mess up your steps and things like that. But as I got confidence, I calmed down out there, my steps got better, I moved faster out there.”

Joe is one of 16 players on the Tech roster from Florida, all from the north or central part of the state. Joe is from Lakeland, about a 3 ½-hour drive from Fort Lauderdale. Saturday’s warmth and humidity was comfortable for Joe, who said he “went shirtless” prior to practice.

“It was a change from Atlanta, but it just felt good,” Joe said. “I felt at home.”

Joe, a redshirt junior, graduated earlier this month with a degree in science, technology and culture. Having missed his entire sophomore season with the shoulder injury, he is eligible to apply for a medical redshirt and receive another year of eligibility. Joe said he is waiting to decide on applying but is considering it.
