When he moved from quarterback to A-back two years ago, Synjyn Days’ teammates kiddingly called him “C-back.” In Georgia Tech’s scrimmage Saturday morning, Days’ went even further, taking snaps at quarterback and a new position for him, B-back.
Days said quarterback Justin Thomas pronounced him "the back." Days showed potential at B-back, where Matt Connors, Donovan Wilson and Days took turns as starter Zach Laskey was held out with a minor injury. On the one drive when the starters ran no-huddle, Days caught a pass out of the backfield for a 10-yard gain and a third-down conversion. He took a snap at quarterback with the second string, switching places with quarterback Matthew Jordan, coming up short on a 3rd-and-goal sneak from the 5-yard line.
“(Coaches) said they want me to play everything,” Days said. “They said they want me to play some quarterback, some B-back and some A-back. I did all that (Saturday). So I’m looking forward to what the season holds.”
Days had never played B-back before Friday, when coach Paul Johnson asked him if he’d consider playing. Days was familiar with the position’s assignments, having learned the whole offense while playing both quarterback and A-back. He tried it out Friday and was on the field Saturday. At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Days is a load and could be an intriguing option behind Laskey. It might suit him better in some ways than A-back, as he is probably better at power running than operating on the perimeter.
“I’m just trying to help out any way I can, trying to enjoy my last year,” Days said.
Days took snaps last fall to keep ready as an emergency quarterback, but didn’t in the spring. He also messed around at quarterback during summer during unsupervised 7-on-7 workouts.
“I still got it,” Days said, smiling. “I still got something in the cannon.”
