AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - Georgia Tech signee KirVonte Benson, a running back from Marietta High, will enroll in January as he recovers from a torn ACL, coach Paul Johnson said Tuesday from the ACC spring meetings.
Benson suffered the injury in the state high school playoffs, Johnson said.
“We sat down and talked and we decided there’s no use to start your (eligibility) clock when you can’t do anything,” Johnson said. “That’ll give him spring practice (to get a head start on his freshman season) and a long time to heal up.”
Benson will join another signee from the 2015 class, quarterback Jaylend Ratliffe, in starting at Tech in January 2016. Ratliffe, from Laurinburg, N.C., is recovering from a brain injury suffered in an ATV crash last July. Tech is honoring the scholarship it offered to him prior to the injury, whether he plays or not.
