Georgia Tech kicker Shawn Davis will start for the Yellow Jackets in Saturday’s game, although coach Paul Johnson left open the possibility that backup Brenton King could also play. They were both listed as potential starters on the team depth chart released Tuesday.
Against Jacksonville State, Davis made a 34-yard field-goal attempt and also connected from 40 yards, but Johnson accepted a roughing penalty to take the points off the board. Davis also had four touchbacks on seven kickoffs, with one put out of bounds. He was 4-for-5 on extra-point tries. It was a much better performance than the opener, when he missed two field-goal tries against Tennessee.
“He’s won most of the competitions in practice,” Johnson said of Davis. “Actually, the freshman (King) won the competition this week, but it was really close. He won by one kick. They may both kick. We’ll see.”
Were King to play, it would be the first game action of his career.
Pitt can be dangerous in the kick-return game. Returner Quadree Henderson was fifth nationally last season, returning three kickoffs for touchdowns and averaging 30.5 yards per return. He has not started this season as well, averaging 18.9 yards per return on 10 returns.
