Georgia Tech kicker Shawn Davis has earned the starting job over Brenton King and Wesley Wells, but coach Paul Johnson advised that the competition is not over.

“That’s a fluid deal there,” he said Tuesday.

Davis won the job last season in the preseason and played in the first five games of the season before tearing his ACL while covering a kickoff against Miami. Davis is perhaps most remembered for missing two field-goal tries in the Yellow Jackets’ season-opening double-overtime loss to Tennessee, but he made his other two tries before his injury. He recorded touchbacks on eight of 27 kickoffs.

King was 5-for-6 on field goals and had one touchback in 24 kickoffs. King’s kickoff average (59.3 yards) was slightly shorter than Davis’ (59.8 yards).

In preseason scrimmages this month, Davis had a field goal of 47 yards and King hit from 45 yards.

“I think like I said last year, I think Shawn’s capable,” Johnson said. “We’ve just got to get some consistency out of him.”
