Miller Grove High coach Sharman White is a candidate for a position on new Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner's staff. White, who this week was named the National High School Coaches Association boys basketball coach of the year, said he has spoken in depth with Pastner about a possible job and is definitely interested.
“The more I think about it, the more I think I would revel at the opportunity to help Georgia Tech,” White said.
White would clearly meet one criteria that Pastner has set out for at least one of his coaches – a deep knowledge of Atlanta basketball circles. White, 43, has been at Miller Grove since its opening in 2005 and has become a leader in the local high-school coaching community. Miller Grove has won seven of the past eight state championships, an unparalleled record of success in Georgia boys basketball high school history.
White, named the USA Today coach of the year in 2014, is also an assistant on the USA Basketball under-17 team. He would be an unusual choice from the standpoint of not having any college basketball coaching experience. White believes he’s ready to make the jump.
“It’s not a big doubt of whether I can do it,” he said. “It’s about opportunity and chance.”
Pastner, named successor to Brian Gregory on April 8, has taken his time in putting his staff together, but may be close to making decisions. Shiloh High coach Kim Rivers, coach of Tech signee Josh Okogie, said that Pastner told him he would make hires by this week.
