Former Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas is getting another chance at getting into an NFL camp this weekend. After a tryout with the San Francisco 49ers last weekend at their rookie minicamp was unfruitful, Thomas began a tryout with the New Orleans Saints on Friday at their rookie minicamp, according to Thomas’ representation.
Thomas was to try out for the Saints at the nickel corner position. He had worked out for the 49ers at slot receiver, but was not offered a spot on their offseason roster.
The Saints’ minicamp runs Friday through Sunday. Thomas auditioned for scouts and coaches at Tech’s pro day at both cornerback and wide receiver, along with quarterback and returner.
Having played quarterback from the time he was in youth football, Thomas faces a considerable disadvantage in experience at any other position, but demonstrated his speed, quickness and playmaking ability over the course of his Tech career, during which he proved himself one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in school history. At Tech’s pro day, he was timed in the 40-yard dash between 4.33 and 4.39 seconds.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints have demonstrated "a good track record in recent years" of signing players off of tryouts such as Thomas'. In 2016, according to the Times-Picayune, the Saints signed four tryout players to the roster.
It’s conceivable Thomas may get other similar opportunities from other NFL teams should the opportunity in New Orleans not work out. According to Thomas’ agency, ESQ, San Francisco officials were interested in Thomas after his tryout, but simply already had a draftee, fifth-rounder Trent Taylor, who was similar to Thomas with far more experience.
