Charlie Thomas looks like a lot of the other defensive backs that Georgia Tech signed Wednesday. He has some height. Thomas, a safety from Thomasville High, is 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds.

Height and reach were two particular attributes that Tech coaches honed in on this recruiting cycle.

“Long frame and very athletic,” safeties coach Andy McCollum said of Thomas on the team’s online broadcast. “So we see him as a safety. Some say he could be a great wide receiver, but right now we’ll take him as a safety.”

Thomas reported offers from Auburn, Mississippi State and Duke, but he elected to stay closer to home.

“There’s no telling how big this kid can get,” McCollum said. “His frame is tremendous and he can run.”
