No. 2 West Georgia continued an undefeated march through its schedule, scoring on six of its first seven offensive possessions in a 31-10 victory against No. 13 North Alabama in Carrollton on Saturday afternoon.

With Saturday’s 31-27 loss by top-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato to Winona State, West Georgia most likely will assume the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division II this coming week.

West Georgia (8-0, 4-0) has beaten North Alabama (5-2, 3-1 in the Gulf South) only twice in the past 11 meetings in the series.

“This is where we wanted to be when the season started. We had goals: To beat Valdosta State and put ourselves into a position for a conference championship and the top spot in the region where we can host a playoff game for the first time,” coach Will Hall said.

The Wolves rushed for 383 and passed for 107 and held North Alabama’s offense in check.

West Georgia dominated from the opening kickoff, scoring on three of its four possessions and turning the ball over at the UNA 1-yard line on the other.

Marcus Sayles had eight tackles and a blocked field goal, and Dylan Donahue had two sacks for West Georgia.

VMI 28, Mercer 21: The Keydets bolted to a 28-7 lead and then held on in Macon, gaining 576 yards, including 391 in the passing game, to break a 30-game road losing skid dating to Oct. 23, 2010. The Keydets converted 17 of 19 third-down conversions to win despite four turnovers.

Aaron Sanders set a VMI record for catches in a game with 16 and the Keydets’ defense posted a game-deciding stop in the final minutes. Al Cobb was 28 of 40 as Sanders surpassed Jeff Hubbard’s mark (13) set against Furman in 1995 and co-held by Sanders when he caught 13 passes at Ball State in the season opener.

Reinhardt 42, Lindsey Wilson 24: Niagel Curtis rushed for a program-record five touchdowns as the No. 8 Eagles defeated No. 1 Lindsey Wilson. Curtis gained 129 yards as Reinhardt rushed for 327 yards on 71 attempts and never trailed.
