Georgia Tech defensive end KeShun Freeman, an early-enrollee freshman, was one of the bright spots for the team in spring practice and early on in camp. After spring practice, he earned co-No. 1 status at rush defensive end – the position vacated by All-American Jeremiah Attaochu – with Roderick Rook-Chungong and then was elevated to outright No. 1 when the depth chart was updated last week.
However, coach Paul Johnson said Wednesday that Rook-Chungong will start the season opener against Wofford Aug. 30 – sort of. Johnson’s words: “He’s kind of moved in front of KeShun for this game, maybe.”
Last Tuesday, after the depth chart had come out, defensive-line coach Mike Pelton said that Freeman was “showing that he’s a freshman.” It will be the first college game for both players. Rook-Chungong redshirted in 2012 and then missed the entire 2013 season. He didn’t get on the field in the first four games and then tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee the week of the Miami game, ending his season.
