GEORGIA TECH
Number of commitments: 24
Expected class size: 24-26
Class ranking: Tech is rated with the nation's No. 41 class.
News of the week: Tech brought in two uncommitted prospects for official visits last weekend, and both pledged to the Yellow Jackets before leaving campus. Dorian Walker is a 6-foot cornerback from Mount Paran Christian who could get a look at running back. Walker picked Tech over Wake Forest. The other commit was Buford defensive back David Curry … Tech also made a grayshirt offer to wide receiver Brad Stewart, the Class AA player of the year from Benedictine Military School.
What to feel good about: Tech registered its first flip for this class when Curry switched from Virginia. He had been committed to the Cavaliers since last summer. Curry played football at Buford with the twin sons of Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof.
What to worry about: Tech is one of only a handful of major colleges who has yet to see a commitment switch to a rival school. Can the stunning streak last two more weeks?
Quote of the week: "This class is very strong. They've done a nice job of keeping it together and building some unity among the guys who are committed. They all have a bond with each other, and I think that's made a huge difference in avoiding massive de-commitments like a lot of other schools." — JacketsOnline's Kelly Quinlan
Up next: Running back Marcus Marshall of Raleigh, N.C., the younger brother of UGA's Keith Marshall, and defensive end Dylan Jackson of Maryville, Tenn., once committed to Tennessee, are among this weekend's visitors.
GEORGIA
Number of commitments: 25
Expected class size: 28-31
Rankings: UGA's class rates as No. 6 in the nation, dropping two spots since last week.
News of the week: It was a rough week, with wide receiver Van Jefferson of Brentwood, Tenn., reneging on his commitment. Jefferson was wavering even before UGA's coaching changes and finally opened things up after having what he termed as a "successful" visit to Oklahoma last weekend … UGA also missed on one of its top remaining targets when cornerback Donte Jackon committed to LSU on Wednesday.
What to feel good about: UGA can finish with a top-five class if it closes strongly. At the top of the wish list is Macon County linebacker Roqaun Smith, at least one more commitment on the offensive line and one at cornerback … Cornerback Chris Williamson of Gainesville likely will make a midweek visit to UGA next week, and he could even bump Florida for the Bulldogs for a weekend visit Jan. 30. He's touring Michigan this weekend.
What to worry about: Several UGA commitments are scheduled to visit rival schools, including five-star Terry Godwin of Callaway. He went to Auburn last weekend, and he'll go to Alabama on Friday. The Crimson Tide are considered UGA's most serious threat.
Quote of the week: "(UGA) has always been his dream school. Every kid in Georgia grows up wanting to play for coach Richt and the Bulldogs." — Smith's coach at Macon County, Larry Harold
Up next: UGA has looked all over the state in desperation for another offensive lineman. After being rebuffed by a few targets, Dunwoody's Nick Buchanan agreed to visit this weekend. He committed to California, but may visit Florida or South Carolina, too.
GEORGIA STATE
Number of commitsments: 19
Expected class size: 19-21, including three delayed enrollees from last year's class
Rankings: Georgia State is rated No. 99 of 137 FBS schools.
News of the week: Zachary Branner, an offensive lineman from New Market, Ala., reneged after he was asked to grayshirt or delay his enrollment until next January, per PantherTalk.com. Branner could end up at Troy.
What to feel good about: Could Georgia State steal an ACC recruit? Chapel Hill, N.C., defensive tackle Tyler Cross, who committed to Syracuse last summer, made an official visit to GSU this past weekend.
What to worry about: Longtime linebacker commit Charlie Patrick of Mays will visit Troy this weekend … Kelvin Rainey, an inside linebacker from Iowa Western, a junior college, signed his letter of intent, but has yet to report to campus.
Quote of the week: "With the six UAB transfers (coming in), it takes away from the scholarships (available for) high school guys. With the situation that Georgia State is in, they need to win now. With a new athletic director and new plans on the horizon, including the potential for Turner Field, this program is in win-now mode, for sure." — PantherTalk.com's Ben Moore
Up next: Georgia State basically is trying to keep what it has for the next two weeks.
KENNESAW STATE
Number of commitments: 12
Expected class size: 14-15
Rankings: N/A
News of the week: Things really crank up this weekend, with at least seven prospects scheduled for official visits. "We've got some kids already committed that will be there, along with other kids that we're after," coach Brian Bohannon said. "We're trying to fill a couple of spots. Between this weekend and next weekend, we'll try to fill those couple of spots."
What to feel good about: The Owls have plenty of good candidates for their few remaining spots. "This class with the high school kids, we're looking for some depth in the secondary, a guy who can rush the passer, and some running backs," Bohannon said.
Quote of the week: "The biggest thing for us is that it's 2015. We actually get to play a game. We're excited about that." — Bohannon
What to worry about: There will always be the fear that recruiting is going too good and bigger schools might try to poach prospects.
Up next: The Owls will entertain a dozen recruits this weekend and between 6-10 next weekend.
