With Georgia Tech backup quarterback Tim Byerly still out after suffering a knee injury in practice last week, his replacement could step into his role as a short-yardage specialist.
Coach Paul Johnson said Wednesday that Matthew Jordan could “possibly” be sent into the game in goal-line situations in place of starter Justin Thomas. In 2014, his first season as the No. 2 quarterback, Byerly sometimes came into the game when the Yellow Jackets neared the goal line, using his size and strength to bull his way into the end zone. Last season, six of his seven touchdown runs covered two yards or fewer.
No. 14 Tech plays its biggest game of the season thus far Saturday, at No. 8 Notre Dame.
Jordan, a redshirt freshman, played his first career game at quarterback last Saturday against Tulane. At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he is not as big as Byerly, but is bigger than Thomas. Jordan had been at quarterback from the time he enrolled in January 2014 until the start of preseason camp but was moved to A-back for a chance at playing time. He returned to quarterback after Byerly’s injury.
Johnson said Wednesday that Byerly remains out. After last Saturday’s win over Tulane, Johnson said that it would be “a couple weeks” before his availability for the rest of the season would be known.
