Georgia Tech quarterback Jay Jones will transfer after two seasons with the team. Jones, from McCalla, Ala., made the announcement from his Twitter account Wednesday.
A redshirt freshman, Jones was one of five scholarship quarterbacks on the depth chart this season and played in one game. With backup Matthew Jordan leaving the team with one season of eligibility remaining, Jones would likely have gone into spring practice competing with Lucas Johnson and Tobias Oliver for the No. 2 job behind TaQuon Marshall.
In his tweet, Jones thanked coach Paul Johnson and the Tech coaching staff for the opportunity to play for and attend Tech.
“After taking time to think things over with my family I’ve found it in my best interest to move on from GT and start a new chapter in my life,” Jones said in his tweet.
Having redshirted, Jones has three seasons to play three seasons of eligibility. If he were to transfer to an FCS school, he could play immediately. If he transfers to an FBS school, he would have to sit out a season and then have two remaining. He could also transfer to a junior college for a year and then transfer to an FBS school and have two seasons of eligibility.
With the departures of Jordan and Jones, Tech has three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster (Marshall, Johnson and Oliver) and does not yet have a quarterback committed to its 17-member 2018 signing class.
