As it turns out, Georgia Tech may attempt to schedule a game during its open date.
In his weekly news conference Tuesday, coach Paul Johnson said that there have been internal conversations about arranging a 12th regular-season game to make up for the Central Florida matchup that was canceled because of Hurricane Irma.
“If you could find somebody, maybe the open date,” he said.
A team spokesman had previously confirmed that there would be no attempt to play a game Oct. 7, which is the team's open date. Johnson said his preference would be an FBS opponent. After playing and defeating FCS Jacksonville State, a win over a second FCS opponent would not count toward bowl eligibility.
Since the UCF game was canceled, Johnson has said on different occasions that he and the team were disappointed to not be able to play because of all of the effort that goes into preparing to play that was lost. Further, he said, given that teams and coaches are judged by wins, having a game canceled essentially counts as a loss because it deprives them the opportunity to add a win.
Johnson also was not in favor of conditionally scheduling a game for Dec. 2, the date of the ACC Championship game.
“Probably not so much there,” he said. “We’d like to be in that game.”
Finding a partner at this juncture would be difficult and might require multiple games to be moved. Indiana, which had a game against FIU scheduled because of the hurricane, had an availability for Oct. 7, but scheduled Charleston Southern.
