Following a leg injury to backup quarterback Tim Byerly in Georgia Tech’s Monday practice, coach Paul Johnson did not reveal much about the situation Tuesday.

“We’ll have several backup quarterbacks,” Johnson said following practice. “There’ll be a long list of them.”

Byerly left the team’s football offices after the Monday practice on crutches and a sleeve on his right leg. It was unclear if he returned to practice Tuesday as the No. 15 Yellow Jackets prepare for their Saturday game with Tulane. Johnson did say that No. 3 quarterback Chase Martenson, a walk-on who was unavailable for last week’s season opener against Alcorn State because of an undisclosed injury, could return next week.

“Anytime you get guys back, it’ll help,” he said. “But we’ll be fine. We’ve got guys.”

Asked if Brady Swilling, another walk-on quarterback who played the fourth quarter against Alcorn State, remained the No. 3 quarterback, Johnson said he didn’t know.

“We just go two deep on the depth chart, really,” he said. “It depends on situations and who’s going to play and all that.”

Byerly remained the backup to starter Justin Thomas on the team’s official depth chart released Tuesday.
