Georgia Tech right tackle Will Bryan received a strong endorsement Monday for him to stay in the starting lineup.

“Will needs to play,” coach Paul Johnson said. “If he doesn’t get beat out in practice, he needs to be the starter.”

Bryan made his first career start Saturday against Pittsburgh. On the whole, the Yellow Jackets offensive line played better than it has in recent weeks. The line helped the offense gain 482 yards of total offense, its highest total since the Tulane game – the Jackets’ last win.

Bryan became Tech’s first first-year freshman offensive lineman to start since Shaquille Mason in the 2011 Sun Bowl. He was one of four freshmen to start on the offense against Pitt, along with A-backs Clinton Lynch and Mikell Lands-Davis and B-back Marcus Marshall.

“I thought Will did some good things,” Johnson said. “He also played like a freshman at times. One time, on pass protection, he was going downfield for run blocking, but that’s the growing pains you’re going to have. But I was happy with Will’s effort and the way he played.”

Bryan played in place of Errin Joe, who was sidelined for the game with an undisclosed injury to end a 13-game start streak. Joe’s status for Saturday’s game against No. 9 Florida State has not been disclosed.
