Qua Searcy will start at one of the A-back positions when Georgia Tech hosts Mercer on Saturday in its home-opening game. Coach Paul Johnson said on Tuesday that the other starting spot is up for grabs.

“It could be any of them,” he said.

Searcy, a redshirt sophomore, had just two carries for 4 yards in last week’s 17-14 win over Boston College, but he caught three passes for 60 yards, including a 22-yard reception on fourth-and-19 in the fourth quarter that led to the eventual game-winning score.

As with most of the performances of the position groups on his team in the win, Johnson wasn't happy with the A-backs.

The group, which included Clinton Lynch, J.J. Green and Isiah Willis, combined for five carries that totaled 3 yards. Johnson said he’s not sure any of them ever got up to full-speed coming around the end to take a pitch from quarterback Justin Thomas.

Green said on Monday that he knows he needs to work on his blocking. He did throw a key block on Dedrick Mills' game-winning touchdown run.
