Quarterback Monqavious Johnson rushed for a 24-yard touchdown with no time remaining on the clock and lifted visiting Morehouse to a 19-13 victory against the Edward Waters on Saturday night in a driving rain.

Remnants of tropical storm Hermine drenched the field and lightning halted the game in the first quarter. Though play resumed, after nearly an hour, the rain continued to pour until the fourth quarter.

Neither team was able to mount a rushing attack on the boggy field. Morehouse had 34 rushes for 98 yards. Edward Waters had 29 rushes for 103 yards.

Morehouse will play its home opener at 2 p.m. Saturday against Kentucky State.

Georgia Southern 54, Savannah State 0: Quarterback Favian Upshaw picked up right where he left off from last season's gutsy performance at the GoDaddy Bowl. And this time Kevin Ellison got plenty involved, too as Georgia Southern rolled.

Upshaw accounted for four touchdowns, Ellison was precise throwing the ball, and the Eagles displayed a sharp new passing offense to go along with the shotgun triple option they ran last season.

Upshaw went 7 of 10 for 115 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Ellison was a perfect 5 of 5 for 70 yards.

The Eagles play South Alabama this Saturday, an upset winner against Mississippi State in an opener.

Tuskegee 36, Clark Atlanta 13: Junior Johnathon McCrary started for Clark Atlanta and was 3-for-7 passing for 27 yards and a pair of interceptions — including one that was returned for a score — before being replaced by Dashawn Blow in a loss to the No. 17 Tigers.

East Tennessee State 20, Kennesaw State 17 (2OT): A sold-out crowd at Kennesaw State's Fifth Third Bank Stadium witnessed the stadium's first night-time football game, and its first-ever football overtime game, but visiting East Tennessee State escaped with a winning field goal in the second extra period.

Valdosta State 17, Albany State 6: The Blazers picked off four passes to hold Albany State at bay.
