Georgia Tech B-backs coach Bryan Cook said that Dedrick Mills got the majority of carries and snaps at the position in last week’s win over Vanderbilt because “we didn’t see any reason to change it.”

Marcus Marshall started the game at B-back and caught an 81-yard touchdown pass on the game's first play.

Mills, who was suspended for last week's win over Mercer because of a violation of team rules, came in on the second series and didn't come out until the fourth quarter. He finished with 14 carries for 58 yards and three touchdowns.

“You assess it based on everything you’ve seen to that point, based upon prior game experience, based upon what you see in practice every day,” Cook said. “The reality is Dedrick was going in a good direction and had showed us some things we were encouraged by. We wanted to get him some good work.”

Cook said it was good to see Marshall’s speed in space. Coach Paul Johnson noted something similar after Saturday’s game. Marshall finished with three carries for 8 yards.

Mills wasn’t perfect on Saturday. His pass-blocking — he hit a player low who was already engaged by another Tech player – led to an illegal block penalty.

But his toughness in the running game – particularly on his last score when he carried two players into the end zone – was a plus.

“Muscled his way in and had the ball really tight,” Cook said.
