Greg McGarity was pulling for the Bulldogs as usual on Saturday, but he was also cheering for No. 79 on the Charleston Southern sideline.

That was Sean McGarity, Greg McGarity’s nephew and the son of Kim and Stuart McGarity of Watkinsville. Sean McGarity is a redshirt freshman and a backup center and long snapper for the Buccaneers. And he was able to fulfill his lifelong dream Saturday of getting to play between the hedges at Sanford Stadium.

“It was incredible,” Sean McGarity said. “It was something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid. Just being back home in the energy of Sanford Stadium that I’ve experienced for however many times I’ve been here, it still came to life today. You still get chills when you run out on that field for the first time. Your stomach kind of drops a little bit but it’s just excitement and I couldn’t ask for a better experience here.”

Sean McGarity said it was a bit odd to be in Sanford Stadium and not rooting for the Bulldogs.

“It’s a team you’ve been cheering for and now you’ve got to play them and cheer against them,” said McGarity, who graduated from Oconee County High. “Today was the one day I was not going to cheer for Georgia and was hoping for the best outcome. We fought hard and continued to play until the end, kind of showed our brand of football, and it was just awesome to be out there until the end.”
