With a strong pro day helping his cause, former Georgia Tech linebacker Tyler Marcordes agreed to an undrafted free-agent deal with the San Diego Chargers Saturday following the draft. He will join former Tech teammate Jeremiah Attaochu, who was a second-round pick of the Chargers two years ago and started last season at outside linebacker for them.

Marcordes had expected to hear from a number of teams interested in signing him after the draft; he said Friday that he had heard from about 15 prior to the draft.

Marcordes started 19 games as a junior and senior and showed playmaking ability with 12 tackles for loss in the two seasons. His 6.5 tackles for loss this past season tied for the team lead. He has also been a productive special-teams player over the course of his career.

Marcordes caught notice of scouts at Tech's pro day in March. He had a 40-yard dash time of 4.62 seconds and a vertical leap of 35 inches, good scores for a linebacker. His vertical was better than any of his teammates at the pro day and would have been sixth among linebackers at the NFL draft combine.

That Marcordes will have a chance to play in the NFL is a testament to his development since he was a high schooler in Illinois. Marcordes showed up at Tech, pre-growth spurt, and essentially began recruiting Tech, which began to take more notice as he added size.
