Georgia Tech could have its best football recruiting class since Paul Johnson was hired as coach in 2007.

The Yellow Jackets, with commitments from 21 high school seniors, are rated as the nation’s No. 37 overall class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. How much of improvement is that? Tech’s classes the past two years were ranked No. 56 and 72, respectively.

Here are three reasons for this season’s success on the recruiting trail:

Continuity: "They've had this staff together for a while," said Kelly Quinlan, publisher of JacketsOnline.com, Tech's website on Rivals. "A lot of the kids they've gotten to commit are kids who they've recruited for multiple years. They've developed relationships."

Better recruiters: Not only does Tech have some stability on the staff, they're also better salesmen. "I would say they have a stronger recruiting staff overall with (assistants) Ted Roof, Mike Pelton, Andy McCollum, and Bryan Cook," Quinlan said. "Those guys do a better job with recruiting than some of the coaches that Paul had his few first years."

More aggressive: Just over a year ago, Tech expanded its recruiting staff from one to four coaches. "They've been offering and evaluating guys earlier," Quinlan said. "After expanding the recruiting staff, they're able to get on kids earlier and get more kids on campus earlier. They get kids interested in Georgia Tech as sophomores and juniors in high school rather than later in the process."

IMPACT RECRUITS

Here are the three most important commitments:

Mikell Lands-Davis, RB, Alexander High: He almost lost his scholarship after being charged with a misdemeanor marijuana possession last summer, causing him to miss Alexander's first three games. But Lands-Davis won over Tech by accepting responsibility for the incident and publicly apologizing. "He'll have a chance to come in and play right away," Quinlan said. "He has a really good skill set for that B-back position."

Kyle Henderson, DT, Tampa, Fla.: "He's coming in early," Quinlan said. "That's a position of serious need for them. If everything goes as planned, he should be ready to contribute as a true freshman."

Brant Mitchell, LB, Nashville, Tenn.: "Brant or whatever other linebacker they're going to sign," Quinlan said. "They need somebody to come in to play that (middle) linebacker spot. Right now, there's not anybody on the team that is a direct replacement for Quayshawn Nealy."

TOP REMAINING TARGETS

Who they would like to get before signing day:

Anree Saint-Amour, LB, North Gwinnett High: "Despite his interest in Stanford, I don't know if his family is going to let him go across the country," Quinlan said.

Victor Alexander, LB, Jacksonville, Fla.: "He's committed to UCLA right now. He really likes Georgia Tech and has a lot of friends on the team. He is a guy that could play right away for them at linebacker as a true freshman."

Daniel Fennell, LB, Grayson High: "Georgia Tech has a really good team this year," Fennell said. "They're about to be in the ACC Championship (game), and they've been really working hard. I love their defense. (Defensive coordinator) Ted Roof is a real cool dude."
