Georgia Tech signee KirVonte Benson, who tore his ACL during his senior season at Marietta High and planned to enroll in January, has begun classes this semester. Benson, who ran for 3,587 yards in two seasons, is expected to play A-back.

“He decided he wanted to come to school,” coach Paul Johnson said Tuesday. “It was his decision.”

The logic with Benson delaying enrollment until January was that, as he rehabilitated his injury this fall, it would not have to count against him as a redshirt year if he were not yet enrolled.

“At least he’ll get here and get indoctrinated in school,” Johnson said.

Benson’s arrival was among a handful of injury-related updates that Johnson gave following the team’s 17th practice of the preseason. B-back Quaide Weimerskirch, who was an early enrollee and then injured his foot in spring practice and required surgery, could be back to practice before the season opener Sept. 3 against Alcorn State. Johnson had previously said that he would not return until after the second game of the season.

While Tech appears to be in comfortable position from a depth standpoint at B-back, at least considering none of the three players at the position have played a snap in the offense, an earlier return would increase the possibility that Weimerskirch could play this season.

“He probably wouldn’t be ready to play in the first game, but after that, he’d probably be ready,” Johnson said.

B-back C.J. Leggett and offensive tackle Chris Griffin, who both required knee surgery earlier this year, are expected back for spring practice.
