Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said none of the A-backs, save Clinton Lynch, are standing out in camp, but that he knows the position is deeper than it was last year.

“We’ve probably got 5-6 guys that can play like normal, like it was before last year,” Johnson said.

The team returns 89 percent of the A-back touches from last season, a contrast to the 2015 season when just 15 percent returned.

This year's group is headlined by Lynch, who rushed for 457 yards and five touchdowns last year. Also returning are redshirt senior Isiah Willis, who had 169 yards and a touchdown, and Qua Searcy, who has missed the past few practices after rolling his ankle. Johnson expected him to return to practice Thursday. Searcy suffered a season-ending ankle injury against Notre Dame last season. Also returning are redshirt seniors Lynn Griffin and Austin McClellan and redshirt junior J.J. Green.

Three redshirt freshmen, Nate Cottrell, who sat out last season because of an injury, Chris Turner and Omahri Jarrett could contribute, along with freshmen Jackie Harris and Xavier Gantt. Only four freshmen have played at A-back at Tech under Johnson. Turner and Harris are walk-ons.

Gone from the group is Mikell Lands-Davis, who moved to wide receiver in the spring.

“So far, I’ve been pleased with the effort they’ve been showing and we just have to get the concentration level up,” A-backs coach Lamar Owens said.
