Georgia Tech’s returners of punts and kicks aren’t decided, coach Paul Johnson said on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets will open the season against Boston College next week in Dublin, Ireland.
Whoever wins the jobs won’t have a lot of experience.
Sophomore Brad Stewart, redshirt sophomore Qua Searcy and redshirt freshman Omahri Jarrett are in the running at punt returner, with Stewart leading. Jamal Golden handled 16 of the 20 punts Tech returned last season. Searcy and Stewart caught one each. The Yellow Jackets averaged 9.4 yards per return, with a long of 44.
Redshirt junior J.J. Green, redshirt senior Lynn Griffin, freshman Dedrick Mills and redshirt freshman Nate Cottrell are in the running at kick returner. Johnson didn’t say who was leading.
Golden handled 19 kicks and Marcus Marshall 10 last season. None of the players mentioned by Johnson returned a kick last season. The Yellow Jackets averaged 19 yards per return, with a long of 34 yards.
