As was expected, Georgia Tech running back KirVonte Benson entered the transfer portal, a person familiar with the situation confirmed late Wednesday. The AJC reported Friday that Benson was planning to submit his name to the transfer database with the intent to leave Tech as a graduate transfer at the end of the summer.

Benson was an All-ACC running back in 2017, his first season as a starter, but missed most of the 2018 season after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the second game of the season. He did not take part in spring practice as he was recovering from his injury.

If the Marietta High grad does leave as a grad transfer — he is on track to earn his degree this summer – he will have immediate eligibility and one season of eligibility. He could petition the NCAA for a medical hardship waiver for an additional season of eligibility on the basis of his season-ending injury in 2018.

Tech has a number of running backs expected to compete for playing time in the coming season, including Jordan Mason, Jerry Howard, Dontae Smith, Christian Malloy and incoming freshman Jamious Griffin.
