South Forsyth High forward Evan Cole announced his release from his letter of intent with UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday. By Friday afternoon, 20 schools had contacted him or his AAU coach to indicate their interest in him. Georgia Tech was one of them.
“Since I announced my release, my phone’s been blowing up basically,” Cole said.
Clemson, Georgia, N.C. State and Minnesota were among other schools to reach out to Cole. Cole sought his release from UNC-Wilmington after coach Kevin Keatts left the school for N.C. State.
Tech had not made an offer yet, but Cole, who grew up watching the Yellow Jackets, is interested. Cole said that Tech assistant coach Eric Reveno watched several of his AAU games last summer.
“I thought they had a really good year with coach (Josh) Pastner,” Cole said.
Cole, 6-foot-8, described himself as a versatile player who can shoot well but also play in the post. He was named the MVP of the GACA North/South Senior all-star game played April 1.
Tech is trying to fill five spots for its 2017 signing class. Pastner has signed point guard Jose Alvarado (New York) and has a commitment from shooting guard Curtis Haywood (Mustang, Okla.) and is pursuing a wide variety of high-school seniors and college transfers.
