Georgia Tech freshman wide receiver Jalen Camp is steadily working his way toward playing in his first season.

Camp caught coach Paul Johnson's attention earlier this week with some impressive catches, and evidently kept it up in the team's scrimmage Saturday morning, the first of the preseason.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but I’m hopeful that Jalen Camp’s going to be a guy that can help us,” Johnson said after the scrimmage, which was closed to media.

Camp was an under-the-radar prospect who broke out with a strong senior season at South Forsyth High.

Tech will typically play with a rotation of three or four wide receivers and might use two or three more on special teams. Ricky Jeune and Brad Stewart are at the top of the depth chart. Besides Camp, others in the mix are Antonio Messick, redshirt freshmen Harland Howell and Christian Philpott and first-year freshmen Stephen Dolphus and Jair Hawkins-Anderson, although Dolphus did not play in the scrimmage with an undisclosed injury.

“Until you watch the film and see what they did blocking, it’s hard to say, but I think they’ve both got a chance to play,” Johnson said of Camp and Hawkins-Anderson.
