BRADENTON, Fla. - Georgia was the clubhouse leader midway through the first round Friday at the NCAA championships. The Bulldogs finished the round at the Concession Golf Club at even par, the best score among the 15 teams to play in the morning.
Freshman Zach Healy was one of six players from the morning to finish in the lead at 2-under-par 70. Healy mixed five birdies and three bogeys. All-America candidate Lee McCoy played his round in 1-over 73. Mookie DeMoss (1-under 71), Sepp Straka (2-over 74) and Greyson Sigg (3-over 75) all handled themselves on a morning when 10 of the 15 teams swelled up to 5-over or more.
Clemson, ranked No. 36 in the country by Golfstat, was last at 18 over. The remaining 15 teams had afternoon tee times.
“This is a hard golf course, “ Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “You’ve got to really stay in the game and keep your head above water. It was nice to see all five of them do that today.”
The Bulldogs will continue play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. After three rounds, the field will be cut to 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on an advancing team to determine the individual champion and the eight teams to qualify for match play.
