Georgia State is interested in playing its 2017 home football games in Turner Field, according to one of its partners in the purchase of the Braves’ home stadium.

Carter President Scott Taylor said during a news conference on Thursday to announce that the company he works for, Georgia State and other partners had reached a deal to buy Turner Field, that Georgia State President Mark Becker "definitely has a strong interest" in playing in Turner Field in 2017.

“They’ve got a lot people working diligently on that,” Taylor said.

Becker also spoke at Thursday’s news conference, but didn’t reveal much about the university’s plans for the stadium.

The football team plays its home games in the Georgia Dome, which will be demolished next year and replaced by Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is under construction and scheduled to open in June 2017.

There have been conversations between Georgia State’s athletics and those working for Arthur M. Blank, one of the stadium’s owners, about the possibility of the Panthers playing some home games there next season. Neither side would discuss those conversations when asked about them earlier in August.

Georgia State athletic director Charlie Cobb referred all questions about Turner Field to the university.
