Georgia State has added to its roster six football players who transferred from Alabama-Birmingham. The Blazers’ program is being shut down.
The players are:
- Bobby Baker, safety, 6-2, 190 pounds, senior. He had 19 tackles and one interception in three games. He may be eligible for a redshirt after suffering a season-ending injury last year.
- Demarco Davis, cornerback, 5-11, 175, redshirt freshman. He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta.
- Kelepi Falou, offensive lineman, 6-3, 305, senior. Former two-star prospect spent two years at Diablo Valley Community College in 2012 and '13.
- Nyiakki Height, wide receiver, 6-1, 190, senior. He had 17 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown last season.
- Demarcus Kirk, running back, 6-0, 190, redshirt freshman. No stats last season.
- Alonzo McGee, linebacker, 6-1, 220, senior, He had 42 tackles and a sack last season.
The six transfers have enrolled and will count against the 25-man limit that Georgia State can sign when the period begins Feb. 4.
It is good fortune that each of these players is moving into a position group that needs depth and competition going into the season as the Panthers look to improve upon last year’s 1-11 record.
Baker and McGee should challenge for starting spots at crucial positions for a defense that was among the worst in FBS last season.
Falou will add depth to an offensive line that must replace three starters.
Height will add depth to a wide receivers group that lost starter LynQuez Blair, but returns Donovan Harden, Robert Davis, Glenn Smith and Todd Boyd, among others.
Kirk will boost a running back group that returns one healthy player, Marcus Caffey. Kyler Neal and Jonathan Jean-Bart suffered season-ending knee injuries last season.
Davis should add competition to a cornerbacks group that, outside of Bruce Dukes, is a question mark.
