Georgia State’s non-conference men’s basketball schedule may not have the name recognition as last year, but it may be more challenging.

Replacing Alabama and Vanderbilt from last year’ schedule are three teams that may be more difficult: Iowa State, which went 28-8 last year, Wisconsin-Green Bay, which went 24-7 last year and Southern Miss, which went 29-7 last year. The Panthers and Phoenix will play a home-and-home at the Sports Arena on Dec. 4 and at Green Bay on Dec. 27.

Georgia State went 25-9 and won the Sun Belt’s regular-season title last year. The team returns leading-scorer R.J. Hunter, second-leading scorer Ryan Harrow, starting center Curtis Washington, transfer Ryan Harrow and several bench players, including Markus Crider and Ryann Green.

It is already being tabbed as a potential NCAA tournament team.

Georgia State will open the regular season hosting Tennessee Temple on Nov. 14. The road trip against the Cyclones and Colorado State follows, followed by more road games against Chicago State, Western Carolina and Oakland.

A tearful reunion should occur on Nov. 29 when Ron Hunter returns to IUPUI, which he led for 17 years before joining Georgia State in 2011.

The conference schedule was released in July.
