Georgia State could be adding a fourth quarterback in the competition to find a starter.

Coach Trent Miles hinted on Thursday during his pre-camp press conference that there may be an addition to a group that includes redshirt junior Conner Manning, redshirt sophomore Emiere Scaife and redshirt freshman Aaron Winchester.

Miles declined to name the player, citing NCAA rules. However, the player would be eligible to play immediately, which implies that it’s a graduate transfer or from a junior college. Georgia State begins classes on Aug. 22.

The team has just the three quarterbacks on scholarship. Most programs prefer to have at least four quarterbacks on scholarship.

Nick Arbuckle was the starting quarterback the previous two years. He passed for more than 7,500 yards and led the Panthers to their first bowl game last season. However, he exhausted his eligibility.

The team opened camp Thursday night ahead of its Sept. 2 season-opening game against Ball State at the Georgia Dome.

None of the three players fighting for the starting position have started a game in college. Scaife and Manning have played only a few snaps as FBS quarterbacks.
