The Georgia women’s tennis team earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA championship tournament for the first time in school history and will play host to the first and second rounds at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on May 9-10.
The Bulldogs (21-4) will make their 28th consecutive appearance in the event. Stanford, UCLA and California have the longest active streak at 33. Georgia is 67-25 in the NCAA championships, including 10 trips to the national semifinals with national titles in 1994 and 2000.
Georgia will face Elon (15-8) in the first round at 4 p.m. May 9. The other first-round match, set for 1 p.m., will feature Arizona (17-5) and Florida State (15-12). The first-round winners will meet at 4 p.m. May 10 in the second round.
The NCAA singles and doubles championship draws will be made at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Dan Magill Tennis Complex also will be the site of the national tournaments May 15-26, a record 31st time it has been held in Athens.
Georgia Tech among eight from ACC: Third-seeded Virginia and Georgia Tech are among a group of eight ACC teams in the women's field. Fourth-seeded Duke, seventh-seeded North Carolina, 12th-seeded Miami, 13th-seeded Clemson, Florida State and Notre Dame also earned spots. Tech (13-9) will play Purdue (12-10). Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, Miami and Clemson will serve as host sites in the opening rounds.
UGA men also will host: The No. 3-seed Georgia men's team (16-7) will host first and second rounds May 10-11. Their first match will be played at 1 p.m. May 10 against Jacksonville State (17-7). Oregon (17-9) and N.C. State (17-9), the other teams in the Athens Regional, will play in the first round at 10 a.m. May 10. It will be Georgia's 36th appearance and 31st in a row.
ACC lands nine in men's tourney: Fourth-seeded Virginia leads a group of nine ACC teams in the field. Seventh-seeded North Carolina, 11th-seeded Duke, 13th-seeded Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Florida State, N.C. State, Clemson and Virginia Tech also earned spots. Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and Notre Dame also are hosts of first- and second-round matches.
