While the timing might have been unexpected, the decision was not.
Georgia’s Andrew Thomas is moving on. There will be no senior season, nor will there be a Sugar Bowl appearance.
No one paying attention will be completely surprised by that. Not only is the junior offensive tackle a consensus All-American, but he consistently projects as a top-5 pick in the next NFL draft.
Thomas explained his decision in a message he delivered via his Twitter account, @allforGod_55.
“Since I was a kid, I’ve dreamed of playing in the National Football League,” he wrote. “I’m taking a step to turn that dream into a reality. I will be forgoing our upcoming bowl game and my senior season, and will be declaring for the NFL Draft.”

A quick survey of six mock drafts currently posted on the internet shows the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Thomas with an average projection of third. If that comes to pass he would, of course, become an instant multi-millionaire.
Thomas, who graduated from Pace Academy, has started every college game that he was available for. He started all 15 games at right tackle as a freshman when Georgia made its run to the national championship game in 2017. Then he made the switch to left tackle last year. He missed the Middle Tennessee game last year with a sprained ankle, then started every game this season.
All the while, he never graded lower than “excellent.” Thomas allowed one sack this entire season and only a few in his career.
