A funeral and elaborate procession planned this week for former Georgia football star Kent Lawrence has been canceled because of concerns over the coronavirus.

A public memorial and celebration of life service will be scheduled at a later date, according to an announcement by UGA.

Lawrence, who also was a longtime, well-respected judge in Athens-Clarke County, died Friday after an extended illness. He was 72.

In honor of his long association with Athens, local police had planned to lead a memorial procession throughout the city on Tuesday. The obituary read, “People are welcome to assemble along the route,” which was to take a circuitous route past the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse, City Hall and Sanford Stadium before ending at Oconee Hill Cemetery.

That has all been canceled “in the interest of public-health concerns,” according to a family spokesman.
